What is Natural Latex?
Green Sleeps mattresses are made of 100% organic Hevea natural rubber, which makes the mattress elastic in all directions. In addition, this material breathes perfectly and is not temperature sensitive. As a result, the mattress never feels damp or warm to the touch. Other products also use Hevea natural rubber, such as condoms, flight tires, Formula 1 tires and weather station balloons; that is, everything that must be extremely elastic and at the same time stable.
To make these 100% Hevea natural rubber mattress cores, we need fresh Hevea milk and innovative technical knowledge. Since the milk must be fresh, the mattress kernels must be produced in the country of origin of the Hevea milk. But what exactly is Hevea milk and how do you find the best place to make the mattress kernels?
HEVEA BRASILIENSIS is the name of the rubber tree. As its name hints, the tree was discovered in 1736 in the Amazon region by the French explorer Charles Marie de la Condamine (1701-1775) who brought the rubber to France as a curiosity.
All over the world we find trees that, when damaged by insects for example, secrete a liquid substance that, when solidified, prevents fungi or bacteria from penetrating the tree.
As a pine tree secretes kvae or a maple tree produces maple juice, Hevea Brasiliensis produces a milky juice, also called latex, that hardens into a rubbery mass. An English pharmacist discovered that this pulp could be used to wipe away lead. In fact, the product name “rubber” (rubber) is borrowed from the English verb “to rub” (to rub). This rubber has particularly elastic and water-repellent properties.
In 1839, it was discovered that rubber and sulfur under the influence of heating, the so-called vulcanization process, result in a rubber that remains strong and solid in a temperature range from 0°C to 100°C.
Since then, the product has been used to waterproof textiles, to manufacture car and bicycle tires, chewing gum, paints, condoms,... and mattresses.
